How to leverage the Jedi Code to relieve pain

Yoda personifies the Jedi Code in a Dr. Seuss caricature

If you are or have been in pain, you know it can be fucking annoying. It can make the most menial task unpleasant. In worst cases, it can make living life an agonizing experience. The Jedi Code withstanding, there is a way out.

“You must unlearn what you have learned.”

One of my favorite quotes from the symbol of the Jedi Code itself, Master Yoda.

This is particularly true because the fitness industry is rife with a lot of nonsense. It seems as if this nonsense forgets our basic function. That is, movement.

So first thing’s first (I’m the realest).

Forget about what muscles are working and learn how you move.

Learn how you function. After you learn what you are capable of, learn what you lack.

When it tests well to move in those directions you are lacking, move that way.

“All his life has he looked away. To the future, to the horizon. Never his mind on where he was. Hmm? What he was doing.”

That was Yoda instructing Luke.

The Movement Model is one of specificity. The recovery model flips that and the painful “thing” becomes specific. This is where it reminds me of Yoda’s words. Since you can’t do that particular thing, you start by doing what you can.

Don’t focus on what you WANT to do LATER, focus on what you can do NOW.

As time goes on, you will start to regain those things that once were lost.

Patience is the key.

“Told you I did. Reckless is he.

The most evil of Sith can look adorable as a lego.

We talked about testing what you lack and moving it when it tests well.

There is a caveat to this. If you have been doing Jiu Jitsu for 20 years and have a hunched posture, or something to that effect, moving what doesn’t move too quickly might literally wreck your shit. Take you to “Snap City.” Injure you. Call it what you will, the result might not be advantageous.

It is imperative to not be reckless and wait until it tests well.

Conclusion – The Jedi Code

Follow these rules and this could be the outcome of your body. Harmonious function, and peace of mind and the knowledge of how to keep yourself pain free.

But beware, the Dark Side of the force.
